Essential Oils for Teething
Teething can be an especially frustrating phase for mamas and babies – especially since teething can literally last for years. It disrupts sleep, makes our littles ones grumpy and is just plain miserable.
Essential oils can be wonderful to soothe and calm a teething baby or toddler. The most important things to do are 1) choose a gentle oil such as Lavender or Serenity blend and 2) dilute the oils properly for your little one’s sensitive skin. Since teething is typically an ongoing issue we want to be particularly careful to dilute since repeat applications of the same oil in the same location is more likely to cause irritation. Remember, while doTERRA essential oils are incredibly safe they are also very powerful.
For Topical use:
Babies: Dilute 1 drop in 1 Tablespoon of carrier oil, such as coconut oil.
Toddlers: Dilute 2-3 drops in a Tablespoon of carrier oil.
(Note: 1 Tablespoon = 3 teaspoons)
The sensations they feel while teething can not only cause pain but fear, because they don’t know why it’s hurting. Thats why essential oils can be such a blessing for teething, they can soothe on a physical AND an emotional level! You can rub the excess oil mixture on the bottoms of their feet or back of their neck.
The 10mL roller bottles we typically use to dilute are 2 teaspoons so just use 1 drop for a baby and a few drops for an older teething child. If it doesn’t help you can add another drop or two or try a different oil.
Natural, soothing teething gel
While typically we don’t recommend ANY internal use for babies or children under at least 6 years of age, and while not all agree clove oil is safe to use on babies’ gums, it has been used a long time even in teething remedies available at the store. We used the below recipe with our youngest and it was a wonderful, wonderful blessing for us. My daughter would literally go from screaming to laying down quietly in seconds.
Warning: Always test on your gums first. Use a small amount. Watch for skin sensitivity and irritation as every baby is different.
