10 reasons to choose doTERRA

We sometimes get posts on our team Facebook group and private messages about anti-dōTERRA articles our teammates have come across online or had sent to them. I too came across these articles years ago and found them upsetting. It was confusing to find people claiming that the oils, that had blessed my family so much, that we’d had such dramatic help from, were not pure. I spent many months sorting these issues out for myself and I wanted to share the info I’ve found. I’ve now met the owners and many times over experienced their integrity and dedication to doing what’s right. There are many more but here are 10 reasons to choose doTERRA …

1. dōTERRA as a company

DōTERRA was founded over six years ago by 7 experienced business, wellness and essential oil experts. There are no outside investors with dōTERRA, the owners personally funded the start-up and own 100% of the company. This is something that really impressed me – they changed their lifestyles, took second mortgages, worked without pay, etc. so that they could keep out investors (aka decisions based just on money). DōTERRA is now THE largest oil company in the world and remains debt-free. As of January 2021, doTERRA has over 1 billion members in the US.

Yes, the founders used to work for another large oil company – but they didn’t leave to start dōTERRA. That idea came later – and why not with their knowledge and experience? This is America after all! I don’t easily trust people, I’m naturally skeptical, but I have really come to admire and respect what the owners did to start this company and what they’ve done since. I have seen how their commitment to doing things with the utmost integrity and to living so that they “practice what they preach”, brings good to every area of the company.

Another key aspect for me is how family-focused and pro-woman dōTERRA is as a company. I love that one of the owners is a woman! And wow, she is a powerful force for the company! At the last conference I went to, the back of the room was full of mamas with little ones sitting on blankets, playing, nursing, and getting to be together while they learned. Here’s a picture of the owners (divided power is a good thing, right?) …

2. dōTERRA‘s Peppermint has no Ethyl Vanillin

DoTERRA is committed to purity. One of dōTERRA‘s competitors published a website that went viral via a link on the owner’s Facebook page. This site accused dōTERRA‘s peppermint of having a synthetic called ethyl vanillin. It was purposefully set up to be anonymous and untraceable but it was soon obvious who was behind the site and the scandal behind the test results. It was all quickly refuted by a much more reputable source, essential oil chemistry expert Dr. Pappas. He does testing for many different companies, and he used to test for dōTERRA. He doid not work FOR dōTERRA, they just utilized his services so he was very familiar with their oils. This accusation later came up again on another site comparing Peppermint oil from different brands. Dr. Pappas’ response to those tests was a really fascinating read, calling into question the solvents used in their testing, their outdated methods, the small library used for analysis, the transferring of the oil to another bottle prior to testing, the possibility of a misidentification of the very trace component, etc. You just can’t believe everything you read online! doTERRA uses cutting-edge technology for their testing and work with some of the best in the industry to continue to make sure every drop is safe and effective.

3. Making a Difference: Healing Hands

I LOVE that dōTERRA has a non-profit charity. It’s called Healing Hands and it’s funded by members, employees and the executives. We have the option to donate a dollar (or more) each month on our monthly orders and they fundraise in other ways as well, such as events or selling special products. Healing Hands has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and changed many lives. Most recently money was raised for victims of the earthquake in Nepal, and they were there on the ground right away, providing blankets and shelter. This is my FAVORITE part of what doTERRA does.

dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation seeks to bring healing and hope to the world, for lives free of disease and poverty, and to ultimately teach impoverished cultures how to be self-reliant. The dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation will be supported by contributions from our Independent Product Consultants, Retail and Preferred Customers, Company Executives and Employees, and others who share our vision. Donations will be be collected through monthly contributions, as well as one-time contributions.

4. doTERRA takes the high road

I listened to 21 hours of the 2013 Convention online, attended in 2014 and 2015, have listened to multiple webinars and trainings, attended retreats and conferences, and sat at private dinners with owners and corporate members, and I have NEVER heard the name of any other oil company talked of poorly. When things flared at one point, because of online (unfounded) accusations against dōTERRA, the owners/leadership sent out an official letter advising members to not participate in anything negative, to focus on the positive dōTERRA is doing in the world. Yes!!! That is the company I want to be with! No members I know have ever bashed other companies in classes or otherwise. My team consists of over 60,000 families and we have never had issues with bashing. It would not be tolerated, because that is not acceptable to dōTERRA. If you have heard bad-mouthing from a dōTERRA member, please know that is not the norm. Personally, between leadership that expects and exemplifies taking the high road and one that intentionally tries to tear others down, I will always choose the company that is kind and upstanding.

5. doTERRA’s oils smell good

There are constant claims from the competitor that dōTERRA‘s oils smell so good because they are not “1st distillation” or that because they smell so good they must be altered. Ummmm…….Huh? They smell good because they are pure, high-quality, optimally-sourced oils. DōTERRA is passionate about sourcing the oils where they are native, making sure the soil is prime, harvested at the perfect time, distilled for the ideal amount of time at the perfect temperature – this leads to high-quality, unique oil that will not smell like grocery store or spa oils. doTERRA also has many exclusives with their growers so their oils are unique and exceptional. One blogger’s viral post spread the (incorrect) idea that peppermint has different distillations. This is information is completely inaccurate.

The plant is distilled for basically 2 hours and its done, no more oil is coming out so they shut the still down. Its absolutely ridiculous to think that the distiller, after watching his oil come over, seeing that his oil level is not growing, shuts the still down and then later thinks to himself “gee, I bet if I fire this still back up (wasting thousands in fuel and labor) we can get some more oil out of that spent mint leaf we distilled yesterday.” Where do people come up with this stuff?? Now the MINT OIL can, and often is (thank God), taken for some further redistilling and/or fractional vacuum redistilling that can take place to further improve the quality of the oil by removing nauseating components of the whole oil (just tiny amounts of very bad smelling components get removed in this process). But NOBODY distills the mint biomass a second or third time. This is generally true, not just for mint, but for essential oil distillations in general. (Dr. Pappas, Essential Oil University on Facebook)

There are no 1st, 2nd, 3rd distillations of peppermint. End of story. If someone is telling you there are then you should not be learning about or buying essential oils from them. The only oil that is distilled multiple times is Ylang Ylang. DoTERRA notes on their site that they sell Ylang Ylang “complete” (a combination of all 3 distillations so you get all the therapeutic constituents). Why would they note it on Ylang Ylang and not other oils? Because other oils are only distilled once. For me, this is an easy one.

dōTERRA’s oils smell amazing because they are so pure!

6. Testing

Speaking of testing …. this is one of the MAIN reasons I trust dōTERRA for my family. DōTERRA wanted to have transparent accountability so they created an internal standard called Certified Pure Testing Grade (CPTG) which is verified by 3rd party labs. The name is a trademark but the standard is real and concrete. There is a lot of testing throughout the whole process (such as monitoring soil quality) and 6 tests performed before the final product is bottled. And they test EVERY liter not just random tests here and there. All of the basics are checked first: sight, smell, taste, and touch. Then they test to rule out any presence of fungus, mold, pesticides, and any other contaminants. What I know, from seeing the detailed way they handle the whole entire process, from the farmer to customer service, is that dōTERRA makes sure every drop is safe and pure. Also while some companies post their tests online, and that test applies only to that one batch that was tested, you can check any bottle you have at SourcetoYou.com

7. Religion – leave it out

This one is more personal and may not appeal to everyone but I think it’s important. I am a committed Christian, I love the Lord and I thank Him constantly for the gift of essential oils. DōTERRA means “Gift of the Earth”. The owners also come from a place of thankfulness, and most of the executives and leaders I’ve found to be God-fearing, family-centered individuals. But I appreciate that dōTERRA does not exploit God or the Bible with their kits, promotions, or literature. Both dōTERRA and its main competitor are run by people of the Mormon faith. I’m not Mormon – but I’m sure I don’t share identical beliefs with the owners of Costco, or my hairdresser, or all of my friends and family for that matter (and that’s fine!). I did a lot of research for a class I taught about essential oils in the Bible and I found the information from another large company shockingly irreverent and inaccurate to the point of exploitation. So I appreciate that dōTERRA doesn’t push their beliefs publicly and I appreciate that they don’t exploit God to sell oils. Essential oils are a gift from God but they are about science – they work in our bodies on a chemical level, affecting the brain, blood and affecting all body systems to support health. My beliefs make me who I am and they make me thankful for the gift of dōTERRA but I don’t believe in using them to sell oils.

8. Education

dōTERRA is wonderful about providing hundreds of hours of free education, guidance, recipes and other support for both oil users and those wanting to build a business. (The business opportunity is very generous and well done too!) We have company-wide resources as well as some rich resources from our own specific team, like weekly webinars and reference books. The printed resources are wonderful, there are multiple Facebook groups and their customer service is OUTSTANDING. We can directly email for product support of any kind and there is a detailed pdf for each oil at doterra.com. More info about the company, the oils and the business opportunity can be found there as well. We want people to use and love their oils!

9. Co-Impact Sourcing

doTERRA searches the globe to find the best places to grow each oil then they team with the local farmers there, many who’s families have been growing and harvesting that plant for generations. And not to buy them out, but to form cooperatives, teach them improved growing, harvesting and distilling methods, and drastically changing their quality of life. Not only do they pay them above fair wages, but but they often bring in the Healing Hands foundation to improve the community as a whole as well."10

Please watch this beautiful, moving video that describes WHY doTERRA uses the Co-Impact sourcing model and how they do it. It is worth 5 minutes of your time.
