Cats do not process oils the same as dogs, horses, goats, etc. and so they require more caution, more dilution and many oils should be avoided completely. Keep reading to learn how to safely use essential oils for cats&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(Read about using oils on dogs <a href=\"http:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/essential-oils-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The basics about cats and essential oils<br \/>\nfrom Dr. Janet Roark, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EODVM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Essential Oil Vet<\/a>&#8220;, a veterinarian on our team:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Cats lack an enzyme called glucuronyl transferase. This is important for the Cytochrome p450 liver metabolism pathway. This makes cats very susceptible to ALL kinds of toxicity, including plant, NSAIDS (like aspirin, ibuprofen and Tylenol), chocolate and caffeine (methylxanthines), lead, zinc, and many, many types of pesticides.<\/li>\n<li>DoTERRA&#8217;s oils\u00a0are tested by batch and are so pure that you can use them topically on cats sporadically in a highly diluted form (as if for infants). <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It&#8217;s not a good idea to use oils topically or internally on your cat every single day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Avoid oils\u00a0high in phenols and eugenols for\u00a0direct application (topical or internal) such as,\u00a0<strong>Basil, Bi<\/strong><strong>rch, Cinnamon, Clove, Fennel, Melaleuca, Oregano, Peppermint, Thyme, and Wintergreen<\/strong>\u00a0as well as oils high in d-limonene which includes all <strong>Citrus oils<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I diffuse everything! i just make sure not to diffuse anything in my kitty&#8217;s room (where her food is) and make sure she&#8217;s not &#8220;locked&#8221; in the room with the diffuser &#8211; she will go away if it&#8217;s one she doesn&#8217;t like the oils.<\/li>\n<li>The main thing is, don&#8217;t give oils to cats topically or internally *every* day (with some exceptions), dilute them, only use top-grade, thoroughly-tested oils like doTERRA\u00a0and when in doubt, ask your vet<\/li>\n<li>Follow Dr Roark &#8220;The Essential Oil Vet&#8221;on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EODVM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0for more great tips<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>DoTERRA Essential oils to avoid for Cats <em>(topically and internally)<\/em>:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Basil<\/li>\n<li>Citrus oils: Lemon, Wild Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, Citrus bliss blend, Grapefruit, Lime, Bergamot<\/li>\n<li>Cassia<\/li>\n<li>Cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>Clove<\/li>\n<li>Fennel<\/li>\n<li>Melaleuca\/Tea Tree<\/li>\n<li>Oregano<\/li>\n<li>Peppermint<\/li>\n<li>Thyme<\/li>\n<li>Wintergreen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2644 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cats1.jpg\" alt=\"essential oils for cats\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" data-id=\"2644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cats1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cats1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cats1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cats1-275x182.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Essential oils safe to diffuse around cats<em>\u00a0&#8230;<\/em><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Any doTERRA oils are safe to diffuser around your cat. Just always make sure they can leave the room if they do not like them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Essential oils safe to use topically on cats <em>\u00a0&#8230;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Diffusion is preferred for cats. If used topically dilute 1 drop of essential oil per 100-200 drops of carrier oil.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lavender<\/li>\n<li>Frankincense<\/li>\n<li>Copaiba<\/li>\n<li>Cedarwood<\/li>\n<li>Helichrysum<\/li>\n<li>Rosemary<\/li>\n<li>Marjoram<\/li>\n<li>Myrrh<\/li>\n<li>Roman Chamomile<\/li>\n<li>Arborvitae<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>From Dr. Tisserand, essential oil safety expert:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I certainly don\u2019t advocate dousing your cat in large quantities of neat essential oils \u2013 ever. And cats are quite susceptible to toxicity from nutmeg oil and tea tree oil. But, a small amount of any essential oil, and a moderate amount of most, will not harm your cat. <sub>(<a href=\"http:\/\/roberttisserand.com\/2011\/06\/cats-essential-oil-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">source<\/a>)<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Can you use oils on cats for fleas? <\/strong>&#8220;We really don\u2019t know what would be a toxic concentration to fleas, while being non-toxic to cats&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As a general guideline, Tisserand believes that the occasional use of essential oils totaling no more than 1% of the product is generally safe for cats.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>In Summary&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Always <a href=\"http:\/\/healinginourhomes.com\/how-to-dilute-essential-oils\/\">dilute<\/a> heavily for cats &#8211; no more than 1% (1 drop per Tablespoon of carrier)<\/li>\n<li>Do not apply\u00a0essential oils on your cat every day<\/li>\n<li>When diffusing make sure your cat is able to leave the room if its too much for them<\/li>\n<li>Not all oils are unsafe for cats, watch\u00a0your cat carefully when using oils.
