CBD vs Copaiba oil doTERRA essential oils
DoTERRA now offers Copaiba essential oil! We are EXCITED to have this oil in our arsenal because it is powerful for our brains and nervous systems. I’m excited to share what all the buzz is about. There are a lot of questions about CBD vs Copaiba oil so I will break down the differences in an easy-to-understand way.
There’s also a lot of controversy, and even more opinions, these days about medical marijuana, CBD oil and products that contain THC so let’s start with some definitions….
Cannabinoids: Any chemical compound that affects one or both cannabinoid receptors in the human body, CB1 or CB2. Some cannabinoids are legal (CBD and those found in essential oils) and some, like THC from cannabis/marijuana, are not …
CBD: CBD, or CannaBiDiol, is a naturally occurring component of the cannabis and hemp plants. CBD made from hemp has a low concentration around 2-4%. If derived from cannabis/marijuana CBD has a higher concentration around 5-30%. Some CBD extractions contain some THC (the part of the plant that makes you feel high) though some are low enough to be legal in our country. CBD is often said to be legal in all 50 states but that is controversial. Benefits include pain relief, reduces anxiety, effective against cancer, treats seizures and other neurological issues, prevention of diabetes through lower insulin levels and promotes cardiovascular health. This is the power of cannabinoids!
Here are 2 types of Cannabinoids:
THC: THC, or TetraHydroCannabinol, is also a naturally occurring compound in the cannabis plant. This is the part of the plant that makes people feel high when they smoke marijuana or use products that contain THC. Supplements that contain THC are only legal in a few states. THC resembles another cannabinoid naturally produced in our brains, anandamide, which regulates our mood, sleep, memory, and appetite. Hence the reason THC makes you relaxed … and hungry.
BCP: BCP, or Beta-CaryoPhyllene, is the dietary cannabinoid found in doTERRA’s Copaiba oil. Not only is it in Copaiba essential oil, it’s in doTERRA’s in very high amounts – 60%!!! While this is a different type of cannabinoid than CBD it directly affects the same CB2 receptors in amazing ways and is present in a much higher amount. It’s also found in lower levels in other essential oils, in lower amounts, like Black Pepper and Melissa.
What are cannabinoid receptors?
We all have cannabinoid receptors in our bodies and they are super important. They are found all over the body, in the brain, organs, tissues, glands and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis. We have two different types of receptors – CB1 and CB2.
CB1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs; and CB2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures. Many tissues contain both CB1 and CB2 receptors, each linked to a different action.
The CB1 receptors are the ones that THC interacts with and causes psychotropic effects.
The CB2 receptors are the ones that do not make you “high” when affected. These are the target when using CBD oil and Copaiba essential oil. CBD actually indirectly interacts with CB2 receptors while the main constituent of Copaiba interacts directly. CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune system, and they seem to reduce inflammation and certain kinds of pain.
So to summarize CBD vs Copaiba oil …..
THC comes from the cannabis or hemp plants. It is completely illegal in about half the US and legal for at least medical purposes in the other half.
CBD oil from hemp contains only trace amounts of THC and is legal in all 50 states. It does not make you high but it does help with neurological issues, pain and more by indirectly interacting with CB2 receptors in the body.
BCP, caryophyllene, is a cannabinoid found in very high levels in doTERRA’s Copaiba and it interacts DIRECTLY with CB2 receptors. When taken internally, the BCP in Copaiba possesses strong antioxidant properties, promotes healthy cellular function, may help support immune function while supporting overall circulatory health, and may help support the health of the gastrointestinal tract and colon. Additional research has shown that Copaiba essential oil (with all its constituents) may help keep the mouth, teeth, and gums clean and healthy looking. Topically applied Copaiba oil may also help keep the skin clean and clear while helping to reduce the appearance of blemishes. Another interesting experimental research study found that Copaiba taken internally may help to support uterine health and ease menstruation.*

- Much less expensive than CBD

How to use Copaiba essential oil
Copaiba is a versatile oil. See some of our favorite ways to use Copaiba below:
- Aches and pains? Apply Copaiba, diluted with some coconut oil, topically as often as every 20 minutes. This has been a lifesaver for my neck, I always have a roller of Copaiba with me.
- Use 2-3 drops, 2-3 times a day for overall health – feel good and sleep well!
- Keep your skin clear and clean while reducing the appearance of blemishes by adding Copaiba to your toner or by applying it directly to skin before applying moisturizer.
- Copaiba blends well with Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, or Ylang Ylang. Using any of these oils that appeal to you, create your own personal fragrance in a roller bottle, and then fill the rest of the bottle with Fractionated Coconut Oil.
- Most of the body can benefit from Copaiba—it supports the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and immune system.* Add one to two drops to water, juice, or make your own tea using warm water and honey.
- When you’re facing a stressful day ahead or feeling worried, diffusing Copaiba’s woody scent can help calm any anxious feelings you may be experiencing.
- Take one to two drops in a veggie capsule to take advantage of the antioxidants—the substance that stops potential damage to your cells from oxidation.*
- Use in a calming bath by adding two to three drops to body wash before mixing it in the water.
Please note: I am not anti-CBD. I think if you can get a find one that is actually pure and high quality (there’s some insane marketing out there just like essential oils) and you need it for a specific health issue like seizures, epilepsy, etc then it can be a great tool in your toolbelt. I do not currently have a reputable brand to recommend. However if I were to use CBD I would absolutely use it alongside my doTERRA oils.

I have recently learned something that you may be interested in knowing. CBD oil (yes, without THC) is illegal in South Dakota. So, it is not legal in all 50 states. I grew up there and have a lot of friends there who were discussing this on FB. I didn’t believe them when they said CBD oil is illegal and even argued with them. Then I decided I ought to check it out myself and sure enough….it’s illegal. Unbelievable!
Healing in our Homes says
It actually is illegal in Texas now too, or they are trying to make it be.
Cheryl M. says
It IS legal in Texas as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. Check it out.
Robbin Lynn says
Correct. CBD is not legal in all 50 states. The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill has made hemp a legal agricultural product in the U.S. for the first time since 1937. It has also made CBD derived from hemp (defined as cannabis grown at or less than 0.3% THC by dry weight) federally legal. Each state can adopt the federal stance or create their own regulations around hemp. This will take several years and if the FDA decides to take control, it may be another 3-5 years before there is any regulation.
In the meantime, consumer confusion will abound as CBD hype will continue to build. The most important thing for consumers to know is that CBD, except in states where cannabis is fully regulated, is NOT regulated by any governing body at this time. Look for suppliers who will be transparent with their Certificate of Analysis (C.O.A.) and learn to read the label. Not all CBD is what it claims to be.
Good luck and happy healing!
Healing in our Homes says
Thank you for the info Robbin
Do rise White says
Thank you for the info. What exactly should the label say? I have read that hemp oil is useless for pain and anxiety, that CBD. from marijuana flowers or leaves is what works. What exactly should label say to have therapeutic help.
Why is innocent CBD oil illegal in South Dakota and in Texas??
Healing in our Homes says
I cant answer questions about CBD oil, sorry

10 Tips Before Purchasing CBD Oil:
Here are some tips when shopping for CBD:
1. Consumer Reports suggests looking for products made by companies in states that have legalized the recreational and medical use of cannabis “since they tend to have stricter standards.” If you live in a “CBD-only” state, choose CBD products made with American-grown hemp (from Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, Montana, Vermont, Tennessee, etc.) rather than foreign sources.
2. Choose “full spectrum” CBD-rich oil extracts, not isolate, distillate or products labeled “pure CBD” or “no THC.” Full spectrum means it includes numerous cannabis compounds, including a small amount of THC. If THC is completely illegal in your state, opt for so-called “broad spectrum” CBD oil products that include other cannabis components but no THC.
3. Look for product labels that indicate the amount of CBD and THC per serving – not just the total cannabinoid content for the entire bottle.
4. Beware of companies that make explicit health claims about CBD products (this is not allowed by the FDA).
5. Seek out CBD-rich products derived from high-resin cannabis grown sustainably in accordance with certified regenerative organic standards.
6. Avoid CBD hemp oil vape cartridge products with toxic thinning agents (such as propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol), flavor additives, and other harmful ingredients.
7. Avoid poor quality CBD-infused gummies made with corn syrup and artificial colors.
8. Think twice about brands that claim their CBD is derived from the seed and stalk of the hemp plant. CBD is not present in hempseed and barely any CBD is present on the stalk of the hemp plant.
9. Beware of multilevel marketing schemes and companies that seek to sign you up right away for recurring purchases.
10. Don’t be afraid to contact CBD companies directly and ask questions. And if you cannot reach them directly, try another brand.
Brooke says
It should be a full spectrum oil for pain and inflammation. NuLeaf is a brand that is backed by 3rd party testing. No matter what brand you use make sure there is 3rd party testing and do lots of research to make sure it’s the real deal.
Due to the price I’m looking for alternatives. It works really well for my neck and thorasic spine pain. It’s also helping ease lupus symptoms.
Diana Fisher says
CBD is by CODE illegal in Iowa as well. It can be purchased from the state approved and monitored facility with a recommendation from a doctor–“recommendation” because it can not be prescribed. There are Mom and Pop shops selling it, not knowing it is illegal, but the state is working on that issue. It depends on how hard the county attorney wants to follow through. We need more public education in our state before most county attorney’s feel they can push the issue.
Although ignorance of the law is no excuse, many attorneys believe there has been too much confusion about what is legal and what is not.
Lynda says
Hi, she did say it was controversial.
Janelle E Verke says
CBD is legal to consume in all States. It is not legal to manufacture and sell in all States. You can order quality CBD online, have it delivered to your home and you can consume it with no repercussions. doTERRA’s oil is NOT CBD and literally has no connection to it. They are trying to ride a trend.
Healing in our Homes says
doTERRA has never claimed they sell CBD and neither did I? Not sure why you wrote that. The connection is that Copaiba interacts similarly in the body. No question on that, I have countless testimonies of that just in my group. Essential oils have been a trend way before CBD has been
Kerrin Hasler says
Your article is excellent and in no way equates CBD and Copaiba use. Thanks for the article. I love it. I feel it is really well written.

THank you so much Kerrin! 🙂

I love copaiba oil, and use many Doterra oils. I mix mine for a massage oil and also take drops internally with Frankincense. Prevention is better than cure and these oils have really kept me away from the docs and any form of pharmaceutical. I would highly recommend them and the purity of them.

The 2018 Farm Bill, passed by Congress, removes all industrial hemp and CBD products from the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
While states still have the right to restrict production and sales, it is now fully legal to purchase, possess, and consume in all 50 states.
Cheryl says
CBD Oil is Legal in Utah effective Dec. 3rd, 2018 as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC just as it is legal in Texas with the same percentage.
Healing in our Homes says
Many products advertise to be free of THC but actually aren’t and that has led to arrests in Texas as recent as 2019. They were making examples of those who chose to use CBD, have it in their vehicles, etc. Im not saying its not a useful product but just that there are still many legal ramifications. The industry is full of fakes and quality issues.
Amanda Phillips says
Hi there! I see at the end of your post that you note that you are not anti-CBD, but that you have not found a reputable brand to recommend. I would LOVE to introduce you to Green Compass CBD, a farm to table, NC, family owned, vertically integrated company that launched in February that focuses on high quality, organic CBD and controls the process from start to finish. We have 3rd party COAs on every batch, and feel confident that you would be impressed by our products. Please contact me about this! I’d love to chat! 🙂

My daughter suffers from anxiety attacks and has been prescribed Prozac. I’d like to see her get off the medication and go to something natural, like Copaiba. I’m a doTERRA Wellness Advocate myself and love our oils! Did I read somewhere that Copaiba might be helpful for anxiety like she deals with? I live in Texas and she’s married and lives in Colorado. Since marijuana is legal there I’m sure there wouldn’t be a problem with either CBD oil or anything similar. But like I said, I’d love for her to use Copaiba. Do you have any suggestions as to how it could be used in addition to diffusing it? Sometimes these attacks happen when she’s at work so diffusing might not be an option then. Thank you so much!
Healing in our Homes says
Hi Sara! I, and many others, have great success using Copaiba for calming those anxious feelings. The softgels are a must-have for me when I fly which is when Im most anxious. Some people use it under the tongue, 2-3 drops, 2-3 times a day but I prefer the softgels for convenience sake.
Lupe Biehl says
I have suffered many years with restless leg syndrome and take 3 different prescriptions for my legs.
I bought a bottle of your copaiba oil.I have used several times by drops under the tongue and when my legs continue to aggravate me.
I was amazed by taking a couple drops under my tongue how the antsy ness and pain in my legs went away and I was finally able to fall asleep.
I am considering trying to get off the requip and Xanax.I would be smiling from ear to ear if this oil could help me.
Healing in our Homes says
wow that’s wonderful Lupe! Im so happy for you!
Jennifer says
I also suffer with Restless Leg (RLS) and am looking to get off medication for it… have been using lavender with limited success (I just read on here that perhaps I should use it undiluted) and now perhaps I can add this to my arsenal and “kick” it to the curb. Thank you for mentioning it, Lupe!
Healing in our Homes says
Yes absolutely, I hope it helps! Aromatouch is popular too
Kerrin Hasler says
Dear Lupe and other folks with Restless Legs Syndrome,
I wish I could remember who told me about using Bergamot and Marjoram for RLS. I put 2-4 drops of Bergamot on one leg and then 2-4 of Marjoram on the other leg and the RLS stops within minutes. doTerra is the only brand I trust. I hope this helps. It saved my sanity! LOL
Healing in our Homes says
So happy for you! Great testimony
Karen Norris says
In the roller bottle mixture how much Copaiba do you use. I’d be using it with Roman camomile.
Thank you

I suffer from Degenerative Disc Disease in my neck. This has affected my feet, causing tingling, numbness, cramping and pain. I was told by my doctor to try CBD cream apply on affected areas and use drops of oil under my tongue. She said her patients are pain free. Do you think your product can help me?
Healing in our Homes says
I absolutely think Copaiba could be a great support for you. Our deep blue rub as well which can be used topically
Roberta says
Does your product contain CBD and or THC? What are the mg? What’s the price?
Healing in our Homes says
No. And it never can because its 100% from the Copaiba tree in Brazil. It interacts in the body similarly (but better) to CBD but it is not CBD
